Alec Foege
Director and Founding Member
Mr. Foege founded Brookside Research after spending two decades as a journalist and editor. Since 2005, he has conducted customized primary research for leading hedge funds, mutual fund groups, venture capital firms, and corporate due diligence firms. He specializes in analyzing management teams, industry sectors, and competitive landscapes. He has written hundreds of business articles and investigative pieces for publications such as Crain’s New York Business, CNBC.com, Fortune Small Business, The New York Times, Adweek, Mediaweek, and Corporate Counsel. Over the years, his work has appeared in the pages of Rolling Stone, People, New York Magazine, Spin, Playboy, and Details, among many other publications. He is the author of four books, including The Tinkerers: The Amateurs, DIY’ers and Inventors Who Make America Great (Basic Books, 2013). Mr. Foege holds a B.A. in English Literature from Columbia University.
Jonathan Blum
Managing Editor and Director of Applied Machine Learning.
Mr. Blum (pron: Bloom) is an author, data storyteller and analyst based in New York City. His book The Story in the Machine is due out soon. He has produced, written for, or been quoted by ABCNews, CNNMoney, Fortune Small Business, The Associated Press and many others. Over a decade ago, Mr. Blum created the original #Digitalskeptic brand for Jim Cramer at TheStreet.com, which exploited the shortcomings in information-driven businesses to create lucrative market strategies, mostly for short investors. He's currently applying his unique narrative-driven analytic approach to facial recognition in media, marine engineering, and spinal cord injury patients at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Andrew Becker
Mr. Becker spent much of his career as a journalist digging into government fraud, waste and abuse with an emphasis in corruption before shifting into due diligence research and analysis. In his more than two decades in journalism, he worked as a reporter, producer, editor and news director in California, Texas, Minnesota and Utah, while reporting extensively from Washington, D.C. He has written hundreds of stories and investigative pieces for publications such as The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Newsweek and the Daily Beast, among others. He has also reported and produced for National Public Radio, PBS/NewsHour, PBS/Frontline, MSNBC/Telemundo and Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting, where he was a staff reporter for nearly a decade. His work has been cited in U.S. Supreme Court and District Court briefs and highlighted by John Oliver on “Last Week Tonight.” He has appeared on CNN, Fox News, BBC, NPR and other broadcast outlets. Mr. Becker holds a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado and a M.J. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Vir Singh
Mr. Singh fell into due diligence research quite by accident, more than a decade after working as a journalist in India following his return from the United States. Since 2007, he has investigated business leaders and firms in renewable energy, fintech, healthcare, higher education, real estate, pharmaceuticals, alcoholic beverages, financial services and other industries. Based in New Delhi, Mr. Singh serves private equity firms, hedge funds and other institutional investors with business interests in South Asia. His investigations have also spanned Southeast and East Asia, and the UAE.
Mr. Singh’s work has appeared in leading print and radio organizations, including the International Herald Tribune (now the International New York Times), Christian Science Monitor, Houston Chronicle, Far Eastern Economic Review, the BBC, National Public Radio and the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA), Inc. He holds a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University and a BA in English and Politics & Government from Ripon College. Besides English, he is fluent in Hindi and has a working knowledge of Punjabi.
